What materials should be used for bathroom renovation

I've used countless bathrooms over the years, yet when it comes to renovating the toilet in my own unfinished property, I find myself utterly baffled.

Of the two elements – plumbing and electrical work – water is by far the most critical in a bathroom. After all, electrical wiring can be neatly concealed within the ceiling during installation once properly planned. But if the plumbing isn't handled correctly, you could end up with a veritable deluge!

Water-related aspects

1. Install a pull-out tap above the basin

Many prefer separating hair washing from showering, and a pull-out tap significantly enhances convenience for shampooing. Plus, when the countertop gets dirty, simply extend the tap to rinse it clean – effortless maintenance.

2. Use splash-proof sockets or splash-proof boxes

With water everywhere in the bathroom, splash-proof sockets are essential. If existing sockets are installed, adding a splash-proof cover ensures water resistance.

3. Choosing Squat or Sitting Toilets

Many, particularly the elderly, may prefer squat toilets for personal hygiene advantages over sitting models.

When selecting a squat toilet, consider whether it features a trap, the water inlet/outlet configuration, and whether the flush valve is exposed or concealed.

When choosing a Western-style toilet, prioritise ease of maintenance, durability, a smooth surface, and efficient flushing. Regardless of your choice, remember to measure the centre-to-centre distance accurately.

4. Shower Heads must be 304 stainless steel

Shower heads and entire shower sets should be made of 304 stainless steel, ideally with a brushed matte finish. Avoid cheap alternatives during purchase, as replacement costs will be higher later.

Moisture Management

5. Moisture issues? Install anti-fog lighting

Bathrooms are prone to condensation. Installing an anti-fog light ensures visibility remains clear. These lights also function as vanity lights, ensuring you look your best when checking your reflection or taking selfies.

6. Opt for aluminium clip-on ceiling panels

Aluminium clip-on ceilings offer excellent moisture resistance and protect overhead wiring. Modern integrated systems combine lighting, heating, and ventilation functions, making them an essential choice.

7. Use 3C-certified tempered glass for shower enclosures

Before and after bathing, significant temperature fluctuations within the shower enclosure due to moisture can cause glass to spontaneously shatter.

Therefore, when selecting shower enclosures or partition glass, always choose tempered glass bearing the 3C certification mark and apply an explosion-proof film. Where possible, laminated glass is preferable.

Additionally, as bathrooms are typically compact, opt for a curved shower enclosure. This minimises floor space usage without compromising functionality.

8. Replace wooden doors with titanium alloy doors

Bathrooms harbour high humidity, so wooden doors are unsuitable; titanium alloy doors are the optimal choice. If wooden doors are already installed, fitting stainless steel panels beneath them provides excellent moisture protection. Regular use of extractor fans is also advisable.

Drainage Section

9. Deep-water-sealed floor drains

Opt for deep-water-sealed floor drains to prevent hair blockages and eliminate odours. The following two images demonstrate their quality.

Additionally, when positioning floor drains, ensure the slope of anti-slip tiles is correct. Test with water to verify drainage efficiency.

10. Install P-Traps on Drain

Whether for washbasins or floor drains, ensure all connected pipes incorporate a P-trap to prevent odours and insect infestations.

Naturally, the foremost step in bathroom water management is waterproofing.

Bathroom renovation fundamentally addresses water-related issues. By implementing robust waterproofing for walls and floors, alongside proactive measures against water-related problems during construction, a bathroom need never become dirty, messy, or poorly maintained.
